“Easy decisions, hard life. Hard decisions, easy life”.
This is a quote from Jerzy Gregorek when he was interviewed by Tim Ferriss. As someone who’s not always direct with my expectations from staff, it’s resonated a lot.
Maybe these situations resonate with you:
- Being too open-ended and not giving enough detail on expectations, which results in not receiving the results I wanted.
- Not wanting to be direct with feedback, as you may be afraid to piss someone off or disrupt a working relationship
- Overly micromanaging an employee to get the exact result I want
- Hiring an A player; but worried they might quit if I’m too harsh on feedback
- Hired a C player; but don’t want to deal with backfilling them so I let them skate along
- Re-doing someones work to meet your standard
- Handling customer service escalations
- Managing payroll and bookkeeping
- Purchasing every little thing for the front office & production
Each of those decisions on direct feedback seems to either add or remove weight from our shoulders. By not being direct with feedback, we’re creating a harder life for ourselves long-term.
Something to consider as you carry on this week with the same problem you were dealing with last week 🙂
I’ll leave you with this great quote by restaurant owner, Will Guidara, “ Praise is affirmation, but criticism is investment.”
